Welcome to Amazing Amherstburg

One recent trend in the market is more and more people looking to make the move out towards the county and with a balance of privacy and amenities, Amherstburg has been one of the most popular locations.

Being out in the county means less cityscape and more agriculture views, but that is part of the allure of Amherstburg. You can have the quiet of the county but visiting the downtown core, you can still get everything you need. It is also one of the safest communities in Canada. At last rankings, Amherstburg ranked as the 13th safest community in all of Canada. With the extended resources of Windsor Police, the town is now patrolled by the Windsor Police Services - Amherstburg Detachment, and looks to maintain and improve this ranking.

Amherstburg has its central core of amenities that borders along the water and beautiful residential living surrounds it. That downtown core is one of the biggest attractions bringing people to Amherstburg. Your residential living is quiet and calm and the hustle and bustle of shopping and business is separate. You most likely will not live near a big box store or heavy traffic. The main road that will bring you in and out of Amherstburg is Front Road also known as County Road 20. Front Road is a continuation E.C. Row Expressway giving direct access to not only the expressway through Windsor, but also providing access to the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway and Highway 401. In addition, this road will also service and connect traffic to the USA via the soon to be built Gordie Howe International Bridge. Amherstburg presents an awesome location for people who want quiet living but also the opportunity to get away quickly. County Road 20 then makes another name change as it moves through Amherstburg and becomes Sandwich Street South. This is where you’ll find some of the main business amenities such as the Wal-Mart Supercentre, LCBO, Sobeys, Rexall, Shoppers Drug Mart, Canadian Tire, and Tim Horton’s. This main road also leads to a majority of the residential inroads as well, proving to be the main artery of Amherstburg.

Let's talk about that downtown core a little more. It truly is the main attraction of Amherstburg as it encompasses so much and is a wonderful social spot. Dalhousie Street is the waterfront street where you will find almost all of your attractions. You have restaurants like Riccardo’s, Lord Amherst, Burger 67, Caffeine and Co. Beacon Ale House, The Salty Dog, and Waterfront Ice Cream. Travelling up side streets like Richmond and Murray will lead you to more dining and shopping experiences like the locally famous Romano’s Deli. Also home to some additional residential living and two new condos overlooking the water, downtown Amherstburg is the hub and heartbeat of the town.

Being out towards the county means greenspace is aplenty and those who enjoy the outdoors will not be disappointed. The crown jewel is King’s Navy Yard Park. Located right on Dalhousie Street and on the banks of the Detroit River, this waterfront park has greenspace, walking paths, seating, and is located right on the main portion of the Amherstburg downtown core meaning you can get a coffee or ice cream and enjoy the scenery. Just north of King’s Navy Park is the Fort Malden National Historic Site. Consisting of even more greenspace and walking paths, you can walk and on the site of the historic Fort Malden. For more hiking, walking, running, or biking, you can visit the Cypher Systems Group Greenway. If you are looking for traditional parks, you can visit Austin “Toddy” Jones Park, Bill Wiggle Park, Centennial Park, Jack Purdie Park, and Pat Thrasher Park. These all provide greenspace, jungle gyms, and sports fields. Other attractions in the area include The Amherstburg Freedom Museum and the Park House Museum. Serious golfers can become members at the prestigious Pointe West Golf Club and take advantage of a spectacular 18 hole course and on-site amenities. Finally, the Libro Credit Union Centre is a beautiful state of the art facility home to two NHL sized ice pads, an indoor turf field, and a walking track. Outside is a full sized turf football/soccer field, miracle league diamond, baseball diamond, and 15 soccer fields that also create an outdoor festival location. It is an incredible community hub and serves as the home of Amherstburg minor hockey, minor baseball, and minor soccer.

Amherstburg is also home to a few of the wineries in EPIC Wine Country. Vivace Estate Winery and Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery call this area home and offer tours and tastings along with event space and onsite restaurants. While not a winery, Amherstburg is also home to the first premium craft distillery in the region Wolfhead Distillery. Also offering tours and onsite dining, Wolfhead is known for their premium liquor like their coffee whiskey liqueur. The craft beer fans also have something to be excited for. GL Heritage Brewing and Lot 10 Brewing both brew their beers right in Amherstburg and offer some onsite snacks and seating to enjoy a pint.

At last census, Amherstburg was a town of 13,910. The average age of a resident is 41.9 years old. Made up of mostly single-detached homes (78.8%) with other attached dwelling making up an additional 15.7% and an average household size of 2.5 people. Amherstburg consists of established families or families getting to the empty nest stage. However as mentioned, due to the market prices in the city limits of Windsor, there are more and more young people, first time home buyers, and growing families calling Amherstburg home.
