Sunrooms: Tips for Building the Best Room

Thinking of a summertime project to help increase the value of your home and get some dividends down the road if you ever decide to sell your home. Maybe you have just finished searching for Windsor homes for sale and have finally found the right one and have moved in and want to enclose a back area or upgrade an existing one. Sunrooms, also known as solariums, are great choices and can attract people searching for houses for sale in Windsor. With new technology outdated ones can be updated as well and help with things like energy consumption and heating and cooling costs.

In the past, sunrooms were built of steel or aluminum and had a reputation for being drafty. That means overly hot in the summer and freezing in the winter, rendering them almost useless outside of those perfect days. Today, regardless of building a new one as an addition to the home or upgrading an existing one, they are leak-free and insulated meaning you can use it almost year-round and not waste energy (and dollars) on energy and heating/cooling. One of the biggest factors is the glass you decide to use. Here are 3 things to consider when it comes to your sunroom glass:

  1. Heat Reflecting Glass: Glass designed for sunrooms allows only 15% of the heat to penetrate into the room. In comparison, un-insulated glass can let in upto 80%, creating the feeling of a parked car on a summer day.
  2. High R-Value Glass: Normal glass has an R-value of 0.9. Standard insulated glass has a R-value of 2. Ask about sunroom glass that comes with an R-value of close to 4.
  3. Dirt Repelling Glass: One downside of a sunroom is keeping it clean. Check to see if glass treated with a repellent coating is available or if a coating can be applied to yours. It means less cleaning and more clear glass.
