Porch Pirates: Tips From the OPP to Protect Your Deliveries

We’ve hit December and the holiday shopping season is officially underway! It is the time of the year people tend to delay shopping for houses for sale in Windsor and instead start shopping for presents for family and friends. While some still prefer to do some in-person shopping, more and more gifts are being purchased online and being delivered. While convenience is great, it also means the return of porch pirates. These are the people who drive around neighbourhoods and take your delivered packages right off your doorstep. Let’s review some past tips and include some new ones here to prevent your packages from being stolen.

The OPP West Region has provided some tips to make sure your packages are delivered safely to you and you only this holiday season.

Request a signature on delivery if possible from the merchant
If you know you won’t be home, ship the package to a trusted neighbour or family member
If you employer will allow it, ship the packages to your workplace
Track your delivery online to know when delivery is expected and plan to be home if possible
Install video surveillance and signs indicating the doorway is monitored with video
Request the package be left in a hidden spot, a side/rear door, etc.
Shop on-line but choose in-store or curbside pick-up to avoid the crowds

The OPP say porch pirates can be planned or crimes of opportunity. That is why it is important to report stolen packages to police so that if they see a pattern of a targeted neighbourhood, they can take preemptive action.
