Places To Visit: Fort Malden

We previously started looking at Windsor-Essex places to visit with historic King’s Navy Yard Park. There is another historic and iconic place in Amherstburg, just metres away actually, with even more history behind it.

Fort Malden National Historic Site, the home of Fort Malden, is run by Parks Canada. Located on the Detroit River, this fort was a British stronghold along the Detroit frontier during both the War of 1812 as well as the Rebellions of 1837-1838. Initially established in 1796 as Fort Amherstburg, it was the headquarters for the Right Division of the British Army in Upper Canada during the War of 1812. When the British Army was forced to retreat in 1813, they first destroyed Fort Amherstburg completely before American occupation. After some light work on the site in the 1820s and early 30s, what we know today as Fort Malden was born in response to The Upper Canadian Rebellion of 1837-38. The last of the army regulars left the fort in 1851. From there, the province of Canada West acquired the fort grounds, and opened the Malden Lunatic Asylum in 1859 operating until the closing of the asylum in 1870. In 1921 the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada recognized Fort Malden as being of national historic significance.

Today, the iconic Fort Malden National Historic Site sits at 100 Laird Avenue South in Amherstburg, ON. It is open daily and runs a variety of different activities and experiences for guests. From tours and demonstrations to school programs, this historic and iconic Canadian site is preserved for generations to come to learn and experience our local history.
