Gordie Howe International Bridge Construction Update

Construction on the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor and Detroit continues as we watch the deck get closer and closer. We took a look at the progress of the bridge in early 2024 and just recently discussed the multi-use path that will allow pedestrians and bicyclists to cross the bridge as well.

Gordie Howe International Bridge Construction Milestone

On March 14, 2024 the Gordie Howe International Bridge announced they had hit another construction milestone. While we are all watching the road deck get closer and closer to meeting with the addition of every new piece, crews were also busy removing parts of the bridge as part of a major step in the construciton process.

Throughout early March the back decks of the bridge were quietly transitioning from steel bents to stay cables. Construction crews on both sides of the border removed what are called falsework bents. These bents were there to support the back span of the road deck during construction. In total the Gordie Howe International Bridge had 18 falsework bents, nine in Canada and nine in the US. The bents were removed at the same time on both sides of the border and each one took roughly one day to remove. Check out the before and after images below.

With the falseworks bents removed that leaves the bridge decks now fully supported by the cable stays. The Gordie Howe International Bridge will feature a total of 216 stay cables, 108 in each tower on either side of the border. 98 stay cables are now in place allowing for the removal of the temporary falsework bents, marking another important milestone for bridge construction.
