Lawn Care Tips For Beginners

If you are new or first time home buyer one thing you may be excited about, or dreading, is lawn care. When looking for Windsor homes for sale, some people prefer large yards and the work that comes with it and others prefer samll yards or even communities that tend to the lawn through fees or dues. Unless you fall into the last category, your house will need lawn care, but don't fret, we have some top tips below for lawn care for beginners.

Top tips for a healthy lawn

First let's talk about blade height. You should always mow your grass high, approximately 6 to 8 centimetres or 2.5 to 3 inches is the ideal lawn height. By keeping it longer and not short you can help promote growth by giving the weeds a chance to grow stronger, while also preventing weeds.

Next we can look at watering your lawn. The key here is balance, water your lawn deeply, but not too often. This will help the growth of deep roots. A good practice to follow is 1 inch of water and only when needed. Typically that is once a week, but weather can be factor. Don't over water your lawn, yes you can do that. Over watering can starve the soil of oxygen and promote disease, weeds, etc.

Feeding your lawn is an important but over looked lawn care step. Going back to when you mow, don't bag your lawn clippings. Take the bag off the lawn mower and leave the clippings behind, they will provide nutrients back to your lawn.

Next up, is aerating your awn. Chances are you have seen someones lawn with little pellets all over it. These are plugs pulled up during lawn aeration. This process helps water, air, and nutrients reach plant roots more easily and relive compacted soil. This is best done in the fall but can alos be done come spring.

Finally, overseed your lawn. In thinned out or depeleted areas, a little fresh soil and seeding with consistent watering can help regrow those areas and help create a more resilient lawn. These weak areas are where weeds, pests, etc., can start and then work into the rest of your lawn.
