This week the City of Windsor began it's new garbage collection schedule. As of April 1st, Miller Waste Systems has taken over garbage collection for Windsor and has hired 40 employees for operations, maintenance, and support. Miller Waste Systems is 100 per cent Canadian owned and come spring and fall will also be handling yard waste. They will also be handling the collection of residential organic waste, the new program from the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority, that is expected to begin this October. Once the organic waste collection begins, Miller Waste Systems anticipates they will hire an additional 25 employees.
Garbage collection for Windsor is now on a Tuesday to Friday schedule instead of the old Monday to Thursday schedule. Simply, garbage collection is one day later. If your pick-up was Monday, it is now Tuesday, if your collection was on Tuesday it is now Wednesday, and so on. Garbage still needs to be at your curb by 6:00am on pick-up day for collection and all container rules, such as requiring a lid, remain the same. The change will help minimize the push backs that occur when there is a statutory holiday Monday.
There is one change to the collection for some Windsor residents however, alley collection has been eliminated and those impacted will need to put their garbage to the front curb unless they were notified by the City of otherwise. This should be a minor change for residents as they already place recycling at the front curb for collection. The change is based on the large trucks Miller Waste Systems will be using. The trucks will be able to pick-up more garbage during collection routes and minimize the number of trips to the transfer station, increasing the overall collection efficiency.
