Door-To-Door Contractors Scam

Windsor Police are reminding everyone to stay cautious when dealing with door-to-door contractors offering home repairs, especially if they ask for cash payments upfront. They are reminding everyone that just because they have a professional-looking flyer, business card, invoice, and/or company name doesn’t mean the business is legitimate. They are urging everyone to contact the Windsor Police Financial Crimes Unit if they suspect a scam.

Tips to stay safe from door-to-door contractor scams

Windsor Police have 6-steps to stay safe and vigilant of these on-going scams.

Verify the company's is real/exists
- Look for business listings online to verify if the business is legitimate
Ask for credentials/identification
- Ask for something beyond a flyer/postcard to ensure they are legitimate
Get multiple estimates
- Never just accept their price, always consult multiple companies
Never pay in full upfront - especially if they want to do a cash deal
- If they are asking for payment upfront, in-full or partial, and want cash consider it a red flag
Trust your instincts
- If the price/quote seems too good to be true, it probably is
Talk to a trusted friend, neighbour, or family member
- Ask another trusted person around you with help vetting the contractor, especially if they say "they have done work in the neighbourhood"
