As August winds down and we head towards Labour Day that means fall is just around the corner and it will soon be time to close the pool for the season. Closing your pool properly at the end of summer is one of the best ways to protect your investment, prevent costly repairs, and ensure a smooth opening when warm weather returns.
Test and adjust your pool’s chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels
Shock your pool to kill bacteria.
Add winterizing chemicals to prevent algae growth.
Skim, vacuum, and brush your pool walls and floor.
Clean out skimmer baskets and pump strainer.
A clean pool now prevents staining and buildup over the winter.
Drain the water 4–6 inches below the skimmer or return line (depending on your cover type).
Be careful not to drain too much, which can damage the pool structure.
Blow out all pool lines with an air compressor to prevent freezing.
Add pool antifreeze to lines (especially in colder climates).
Disconnect, drain, and store/protect pumps, filters, and heaters if possible.

Make sure the cover is secure to prevent damage from wind or snow.
Check it periodically during the off-season for sagging or tears.
