For the first time ever the Gordie Howe International Bridge lit up over the Detroit River. Consisting of 5000 white LED lights across the towers, cables and deck, the project team started testing the bulbs that highlight the stay cables and bridge deck as part of the aesthetic lighting system. The project team says multiple aesthetic bridge lighting sequences will be incorporated throughout the year. The project team says they anticipate that testing will continue nightly for the next four-to-six weeks and during the testing process, generally turning on starting at dusk, however the lights may be off to allow for technical/physical adjustments or in response to weather/environmental conditions.
The new $6.4-billion bridge connecting Windsor and Detroit is scheduled to open this fall, but an official opening date has not been set yet. While construction nears completion, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has begun moving into their new port of entry facility and the City of Windsor has announced the Broadway Street multi-use path is complete and the Malden Park Trailhead and bike racks have been installed. These will feed into the Canadian port of entry and allow for access to the bridge's pedestrian path.
