Starting on January 1, 2026 Windsor-Essex homeowners will have new a new way to recycle. In June 2021 Ontario announced that the financial and operational responsibility of recycling would switch from municipalities to the organizations that produce packaging, paper, plastic, etc.
Circular Materials is the company that will take on the responsibility of the recycling system for Windsor Essex and GFL Environmental has been chosen to handle the collection for them thorughout our region. Come January 1, 2026 you will no longer need to seperate plastics and papers into red and blue bins like we do now. Instead recycling will become a single-stream recycling system. This means all recyclable materials can go into one single bin, no need to sort anymore. Deliveries of new a 95 gallon bin to each home is underway and will be completed over the next few weeks in preperation for January 1st, 2026. For Windsor, collection of the new blue bins will be bi-weekly to aglong with weekly green bin pickup, and bi-weekly garbage pickup. The rest of the region will have bi-weekly blue bin collection along with with weekly green bin collection and for the time being weekly garbage collection. Below is a guide to the new recycling program, and you can visit the Circular Materials website to learn more about the changes coming to Windsor Essex recycling.
