The answer depends on the municipality . While sidewalks are publicly owned, many local by-laws place the responsibility for snow and ice removal on the adjacent property owner or occupant.
Sidewalk Snow Removal by Municipality
City of Windsor
- Residents are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks abutting their property as per By-Law #8544.
- Must remove snow completely from your sidewalk to ensure that people are able to pass through safely and freely.
- Residential property owners have 12 hours after a snowfall to clear their sidewalks
Town of Essex
- Owners or occupants of all properties in the Town of Essex are responsible for the removal of snow and ice from sidewalks in front of, alongside and at the rear of their properties as per By-law 1108
- Owner/occupant of a single family dwelling must clear sidewalks of snow and ice within 12 hours following the snow fall or ice formation.
- Multiple family building, the owner is responsible for snow and ice removal.
Town of Tecumseh
- Property owners are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks abutting their property in accordance with Town of Tecumseh By-law 2016-06
- Sidewalks in front of residential buildings within 12 hours of a snowfall.
Town of LaSalle
- Clear snow and ice from the municipal sidewalk abutting your property.
- Keep catch basins clear of snow and ice for proper drainage during a thaw.
- Keep fire hydrants clear and visible.
Town of Amherstburg
- All municipal sidewalks will now be cleared of snow and ice by Town Staff.
Town of Kingsville
- Sidewalk clearing is done by the municipality by priority
