Where to pick apples and pumpkins in Essex County this October, plus monarchs, hawks and a calendar for the rest of the season.
October is the best month of the year to be in the county. The lake keeps things mild, the orchards are still picking, and two of North America's big wildlife migrations pass right over Essex County. If you're making a list of fall activities in Windsor-Essex, apple picking and a pumpkin patch probably sit at the top, and most of the good ones are within an hour of downtown Windsor.
This guide covers what's open now, what's dated, and which towns each outing puts you in. That last part matters if you're new to the region or thinking about a move: a fall weekend in Kingsville or Amherstburg tells you more about a community than any listing photo.
The Lake Erie shoreline gives Essex County a longer growing season than most of Ontario, and the apple harvest runs from late August to the end of October. By early October, the late varieties are coming in: Empire, Mutsu, Ambrosia and Golden Delicious join the Honeycrisp and McIntosh that ripen earlier. Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island lists several orchards where you can do your own apple picking in Essex County. These four are open this fall.
The biggest day out of the group, now in its 50th season. Eight varieties are on the trees this week, including Honeycrisp, Crimson Crisp and Ambrosia, with hay rides, a corn maze, farm animals, a haunted barn and apple fritters at the Kountry Kitchen.
Daily, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.A smaller family farm on Arner Townline. You check in at the farm market, get your containers, and staff point you to the rows that are ready. Homemade cider, cider donuts and pies are waiting when you're done.
U-pick apples until Oct. 25On Lakeshore Road 107, close to Windsor and Tecumseh. It grows a long list of varieties, including McIntosh, Royal Gala, Empire, Mutsu (Crispin), Fuji and Jonagold, so it's a good pick if you want baking and eating apples in one trip.

Call 519-723-4807 for picking statusMeleg's has a few house rules worth knowing before you go: it's closed on Saturdays, there's a $1 entry fee for anyone over 5, and you have to use the farm's containers rather than your own bags. Thiessen's two big dates are Thanksgiving Monday, October 12, when every activity is running, and the Halloween Extravaganza on Saturday, October 24, where costumes are welcome. Neither farm allows pets, though service animals are fine at Thiessen's.
Call the orchard the morning you plan to go. Late in the season, popular varieties like Honeycrisp can be picked out of the trees within days, and some farms switch to selling ready-picked bins. Wear closed-toe shoes, because orchard rows are uneven and often muddy after rain.
Picking a pumpkin straight off the vine beats grabbing one from a grocery store bin, and the county has two well-known pumpkin patches near Windsor.
Spookley's Pumpkin Patch at Thiessen Orchards is the classic version. You ride a wagon out to the field and pick from pumpkins of every size, priced per pumpkin. Pair it with apple picking and you've covered both in one afternoon in Leamington. Go on a weekday if you can; Thanksgiving weekend and the last two Saturdays of October are the busiest days.
PéPé's Pumpkin Patch at 2651 Front Road in LaSalle is the closest option for anyone in Windsor's west end, LaSalle or Amherstburg. It has traditionally opened in mid-September and run daily until October 31, with no admission fee and small charges for the hay ride, train ride, corn maze and face painting. Beyond pumpkins, it sells gourds, straw and other porch decorations. Hours can change year to year, so check its Facebook page before you head out.
Every fall, monarchs born in late summer fly roughly 3,000 km to the mountains of central Mexico. Lake Erie is a barrier, so they funnel down to the shortest crossing point: the tip of Point Pelee. Parks Canada says the Point Pelee monarch migration runs from late August to mid-October, and numbers build when wind, rain or cold keep the butterflies from crossing.
Go to the Tip just before sunset or early in the morning, and look high in sheltered trees. Pack binoculars. A monarch with its wings closed looks exactly like a dead leaf.
Stay late on Saturday, October 10 for a Self-guided Dark Sky Night. The park stays open until midnight, star charts are handed out at the gate, and volunteers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada set up telescopes if the sky is clear. It's included in regular admission.
Audubon Magazine has named Holiday Beach Conservation Area one of the 10 best places in North America to see the raptor migration. The Festival of Hawks wrapped up on September 19 and 20, but the birds keep coming through the fall. Tens of thousands of hawks pass over this stretch of Lake Erie each season.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority recommends arriving between 9 a.m. and noon, when the hawks fly low. Climb the Hawk Tower for the best view. The site is on County Road 50 near Malden Centre, about 15 km southeast of Amherstburg, so it pairs well with lunch in Amherstburg's old town or a drive through Harrow afterward.
If a weekend in Kingsville, Harrow or Amherstburg has you wondering what it would cost to live there, a local agent can walk you through recent sales and what's listed now.
Get in TouchThe Lake Erie North Shore wine region sits at roughly the same latitude as the Mediterranean, and Essex County has about 20 wineries along it. Harvest season is a good time to visit tasting rooms in Kingsville, Harrow and Colchester. The EPIC Tasting Pass covers tastings at up to 12 wineries. Its new November Meltdown event on November 7 has already sold out, which tells you how quickly these weekends fill.
For something free, the Chrysler Canada Greenway is a 42 km rail trail from Oldcastle to Leamington that links 25 natural areas, from woodlots to wetlands. Ride or walk a section near Harrow or McGregor while the leaves turn. Closer to the city, the 350-hectare Ojibway Prairie Complex on Windsor's west side turns gold and rust as the tallgrass dries out.

If you're relocating or weighing a move within the county, use these outings as scouting trips. Leamington and Kingsville put you minutes from Pelee, the orchards and most of the wineries. Amherstburg and Harrow sit closest to Holiday Beach and the western end of wine country. LaSalle and South Windsor keep you near Ojibway and a short drive from everything else.
Pay attention to the things a listing won't show: how busy Talbot Road gets on a Saturday, how far the nearest grocery store is, and whether the main street is still open after 6 p.m. in October. That's what you'll live with year-round.
A fall drive through the county is a good way to find the town that fits. When you're ready to look at homes there, or list yours before winter, a Jump Realty agent can help.
