Home Maintenance Tips: Winter

As we’ve entered a cold snap and the snow has finally come (and a lot of it), we have some tips to keep your home safe and maintained through the rest of winter!

Air Filters
- Make sure they are cleaned or replaced prior to firing up the furnace. Used or dirty filters make heating the home more difficult and less efficient. They also represent a possible threat of fire, this is a can't miss item.
Blinds/Window Treatments
- When the sun is hsining in, open up the shades and let that sun in. This will help to warm up the house, even if it is cold, that sun is still warm. As the sun starts to set or hide behind overcast and clouds, shut the blinds and drapes to help keep all that heat in and insulate the home to furhter heat loss
Windows and Doors
- One of the biggest culprits in high energy costs. When doors and windows have old or damaged seals, they get drafts, letting the cold air in and warm air out. Minimizing these drafts means more efficient heating and reducing your energy bills. You can address this yourself by adding weather stripping around windows and doors to fill any gaps
Thermostat
- Make your home comfortable...when you're home! Get a programmable thermostat that allows you to set times when temperatures are different. You can set it to colder during the times when the home is empty and at night and then set it to higher just before you get home to make it toasty for you. This can help you to save on energy costs big time
Unused Rooms
- If you have rooms in your home that are not used you can close the vents off and shut the doors to them. This will redirect heat to the rest of the used living spaces and not let the cold air from those dark unused rooms spread, again creating a more efficient heating and spending less on energy.
