The Town of Amherstburg voted 6-1 to approve the proposed redevelopment of General Amherst during the July 14th council meeting. This is antoher step towards the old high school in Downtown Amherstburg being transformed into a mixed-use development.
The redevelopment of General Amherst is being spearheaded by Valente Development. The plan is for two new towers to join the Amherstburg skyline, an 8-storey tower and an 11-storey tower. The development project will include 144 residential units, a mix of condos and rental units, across the two towers and the ground floor will feature a mix of retail space and restaurants.
The redevelopment approval was not without hurdles over the last few months. Neighbouring residents showed opposition to the plan and during the April council meeting they raised their concerns about the building height, lighting, parking, and traffic. Council says they heard the concerns and town administration has worked with the developer to address and make compromises on these concerns. Council also noted that provincial regulations meant rejecting the proposal could open the town to legal issues if the developer wanted to do so. A lawyer who specializes in land development and municipal law was brought in by the city and advised that they would not be able to defend the rejection.
