The green bin collection is set to begin in Windsor, Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, and Tecumseh and according to program officials, it could potentially cut garbage in half, based on an audit from 2022- 23 that found on average 48% of household garbage set-out was food and organic waste. The Green Bin Program comes into effect on the heels of the announcement of changes coming to how we recycle in 2026.
Weekly green bin collection begins the week of October 21st, 2025 for the communities in Phase 1 of the program, Windsor, Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, and Tecumseh. The Green Bin will be collected weekly to help reduce odours and increase participation. In Windsor, garbage collection will move to bi-weekly, while other municipalities will remain weekly for both for the time being. Be sure to consult your collection calendar to find out your new schedule. Approximately 120,000 single-family homes received green bins from the EWSWA this July to October. Amherstburg, Kingsville, and Leamington will start their Green Bin Program in the fall of 2026 with their bins being delivered during 2026.
